Literary Note

'This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this. No matter how bitter things get, they’re still our friends and this is still our home.'

This comment is another example of foreshadowing; it is also a reference to the civil war, as the civil war was between the Confederates and the Yankees and the trial. This quote is also some wisdom from Atticus about how despite what the upcoming trial is going to do to the townsfolk and despite the fact that it may alienate Jem and Scout they need to remember that these people they’re fighting against, the other citizens of Maycomb, are still their friends.
