“Jem and I always thought it funny when Atticus pecked Uncle Jack on the cheek; they were the only two men we ever saw kiss each other”

Scout and Jem are a bit confused about why Uncle Jack and Atticus are the only two men they have ever seen kiss. This is a reference to the strict social rules that dominated white southern society at the time the book was written, it would have been considered inappropriate behaviour for that time whereas these now we would barely bat an eyelid.
