Literary Note

“Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,’ Atticus said”

This line is in response to a very innocent question from Scout about whether Atticus will win the court case. This shows us that Atticus knows, unlike the innocent Scout, that it is unlikely that they will win the trial due to the prejudices surrounding black Americans. The words ‘no reason for us not to try and win’ shows that although Atticus knows that racism will stand in the way of a fair trial he still naively hopes that they can win.
