“It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight”

This is a significant moment in the book as up until now Scout has always been hot-headed and ready to fight anyone if they so much as insulted a member of her family. By using the word ‘first’ Harper Lee is drawing our attention to the importance of the incident. This incident shows us how Scout is beginning to mature and reinforces the idea that this book is a kind of ‘coming of age’ book.
