“Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up"

This is an example of the town’s unfounded racism; here Atticus compares it to a disease. As Atticus points out these people are usually very nice people but something about a Negro makes them lose all sense of reason. It also foreshadows the incident with the mad dog.
