"I sat at the little table in the dining room; Jem and Francis sat with the adults at the dining table”

This shows that as they are growing up Scout and Jem are drifting apart from each other. It also reinforces the idea that Jem is almost an adult, while Scout is still considered a child; much to her dislike.
