Historical Note

"Confederates"

The confederates are mentioned when Atticus is telling Scout about Cousin Ike Finch who was Maycomb County’s sole surviving confederate veteran, and they are pertinent to the novel as they are the army of the South where the story is set. The confederates were the members of the Confederate States of America that was an unrecognized state made up of eleven southern slave states. The states that made up the confederates were: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina.  The confederacy officially existed from 1861 to 1865 though it has an enduring legacy.
